Last weekend I put my Mother's Day present to good use (yes, I know and ice cream maker is an appliance, but I asked for it) and made homemade vanilla ice cream. It was so yummy! I could have eaten the entire 5 quarts by myself and would have died fat and happy. I'd love to churn some all summer, but am afraid i will not fit into my bathing suit if I do! Has anyone made the lower fat versions of ice cream with any success?

I have not done low fat ice cream, but I make sorbets and sherbets more often then ice cream. If I am going for ice cream I go for the real thing bring on the fat and calories. Having said that I limit my ice cream making but I do love sorbets I have raspberry and mango in the freezer as we speak.

Scarlett, what kind did you get? I love homemade ice cream and I was wondering about the small kind you put in the freezer. 5 qts sounds like the ice & salt kind. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

I have the Rival 6 quart. It was very inexpensive, but worked great. It does use the ice and salt and was a little noisy while churning, but it just added to the fun for my 5 year old.

There's one more thing DH has in common with 5 yr olds, he loves anything with a motor!

I have the small on you put in the freeze and an older one uses ice and salt but I find I use the small more. When I bought mine it came with tow canisters, which is great. Once the weather gets warm I keep on in the freezer almost all the time so you can make ice cream at the spur of the moment. And Scarlett has inspired me so I made coffee ice cream this afternoon when I got in form work. I cant wait for diner to be over so I can eat it

Oh, I have to say that the Butterfinger Ice Cream is the best we've ever made. That is one of the very best recipes that I've made from this forum! Our family loved it, too.

My favorite makes delicious homemade ice cream.... he only makes it on certain holidays so it's always a treat. There is nothing low-fat about it at all though but it's so tasty that I don't even mind. He uses the ice and salt kind.

No, I haven't. She did post a while back that she is enjoying www.sparkpeople.com (http://www.sparkpeople.com). I surely do miss her. Hope she spends some time with us soon.
