I am working on getting a new business started up and I would like to pick your brains for a minute. What kind of card games remind you of the south? Paricularly games women get together to play - or got together in the past to play...
:) TIA

Bridge is the one that comes to mind but I've never played. I think some of my mother's friends played but I don't remember her playing. And maybe bridge is not just in the south but we were from SC.

The "in" thing for women to play is Bunco or Bunko, depending on how you want to spell it. All of my invites that I have received have been for bunco. A friend of mine does play Rook with a set group of ladies once a week.

I have friends who like to play bunco. I have always enjoyed playing spades with friends. My mother used to play majong when I was growing up. I liked the pretty tiles they played with.

A lot of people play bunco (and lrc) here too, but I wasn't clear enough in my original post. I am specifically thinking about card games people played in the past - like bridge, spades, canasta (sp?). I was wondernig what the most popular game was.

Rook was the first one that came to my mind! My in-laws are SERIOUS Rook players.

Growing up (I was born in 1962) my Mother and her friends were serious about Bridge. They played weekly alternating member's homes. Card tables were set up and lunch was always something special. I can remember my Mother getting ready and I thought how wonderful it was to be an adult:confused:
These same "ladies" still get together weekly. They don't play Bridge anymore, but do meet for lunch at a local restaurant.

Bunco is still pretty popular too. My Mom used to play and a group at church plays too. There is also an article in the paper where bridge hands are discussed.

Bridge and bunco come to mind for me but I've noticed a few mens and mixed group pinochle groups around here in Charleston.
What kind of business are you planning??????
Euchre and Rook what I thought of
I have an Aunt who is a die hard Euchre player I will not be her partner
To be a sweet blue hair lady she will take you down if you screw up being her partner :D

The ones that come to mind for me are Rook, Spades, and Gin Rummy. And I can't remember how to play any of them!:(

In a twist of brainstorming we decided in the end to make up our own card game..well sort of...which leads me to a new post I'm about to make.
Thanks so much everyone!
