I have a Southern Living magazine from July of 08 with a recipe for fresh corn cakes. It calls for 5 ears of corn and says to put the fresh corn kernels (along with some other ingredients) in a food processor to coarsely chop them. Do I need to boil the corn first?

Without seeing the recipe I would say no to boiling the ears first. You stated "to put the fresh corn kernels (along with some other ingredients) in a food processor to coarsely chop them." That usually means uncooked :-)

You can also skip the toaster oven part and mix the other ingredients in a bowl with canned corn if you want.
