Does anyone have a favorite family recipe that took a while to prepare back in the day, but still prepare it now with new updates or twists? I want to keep some of those old fashioned traditions alive, but I just don't have the time. Any help would be appreciated.:)

Welcome to the boards! What are you looking for--anything specific? All of my mom's recipes I make are just the same as she made them. Maybe less a little salt or the use of lard in biscuits and things :)We have some great cooks on this board so if you are needing meal ideas I know there will be a huge response!

My mother makes killer lemon meringue pies. She actually updated the recipe herself to make the pie filling in the microwave instead of on top of the stove. Quick and easy. Love it! The recipe is on my blog (no, I'm not selling anything there!:D).

I just try to save time where I can. For instance, I use my bread machine - even to knead bread that I am going to bake in the oven. Here's an example.
Heavenly Rolls
1 cup whole milk
1 stick real butter, softened
1/4 c. sugar
1 t. salt
4 c. bread flour
2 eggs, beaten
2 1/2 t. bread machine yeast (or rapid rise)
Place in bread machine in order recommended by instruction book - use "dough" cycle.
Remove dough from machine when it's ready and knead gently on ligtly floured surface. Divide and shape into 24 smooth round balls. Place rolls 3/4 inch apart on greased baking pan and cover with cloth. Allow to double in a warm place.
Bake at 350 degrees for 16-18 minutes. I brush them w/ butter when I take them from the oven to keep the tops soft.

One of the magazines that I used to read (I am a recovering Magazine addict btw!) had a recipe make over each month where they took a reader's favorite recipe and made it healthier. Often the recipes were old family favorites that were high in fat. I am not sure if you meant something like this or changing the recipe to use modern conveniences. I tend to follow the old recipes as closely as I can but I will use modern appliances to help like my KA mixer and microwave to melt something instead of double boiler. Now if a recipe is to be cooked in cast iron skillet, I still use those. I even have some of my grandmother's well seasoned cast iron. It is the best.

My mom (and now me) made a lemon pie that is sweeten condensed milk and about a 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup lemon juice. Mixed together well, pour into an all ready made pie crust. Put in fridge till set. I wait atleast an hour.
I've heard of people mixing whipped topping in the "filling" to make it thicker/fluffier.

Here's an easy version of key lime pie. It's really good - we prefer it now as I don't like to use raw eggs in things kids eat. My mom's recipe was a little more difficult - I love good and easy recipes.
1 larger sized graham cracker crust
1 tablespoon grated lime zest
3/4 cup fresh lime juice
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (3.5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
1 (8 ounce) extra creamy Cool Whip
In a large bowl, mix together lime rind, lime juice, and condensed milk. Whisk in pudding mix and allow to set up 5 minutes. Fold in 8 ounce tub of CW. Pour mixture into crustl. Chill several hours before serving.
Garnish with additional whipped topping if desired.
I remember my mom making homemade pumpkin pie, I remember her cutting open a pumpkin pulling out the seeds and some how she puree the inside.. She is gone now and i wasn't able to get any of her recipes..
Also how about canning, and making jellys

My Mom used to do some canning, making jelly, making homemade Chili sauce, and watermelon rind pickles. None of which she passed down to me.(recipes or procedures)

One of the biggest things I've seen in a lot of my mom's recipes is whipped cream. Now I use Cool Whip:)

Ann I love watermelon rind pickles! Have not had them in forever. I used to see them at potlucks growing up. We never made these in our family.
