I am looking for a cabin for our family for Martin Luther King weekend in Jan. We would like to be in Western NC / North GA area. I want a secluded, newer, not too rustic cabin with a fireplace and hot tub. We will be bringing 6-8 people. I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Contact any of the realtors in Cashiers or Highlands and I bet they can quickly hook you up. Saffire Valley would be good if you like to ski.

Would you be intrested in coming to Boone, NC? Friends of ours have a beautiful cabin there...let me see if I can find his web site with pics.

we have only stayed at the one in Piegon Forge, but I can assure you that they are very clean and well maintained.

One of my very favorite websites for vacations is VRBO.com. It's a world-wide site and the USA section is by state. I've stayed in Murphy, NC and it's a perfect place, located 2 hours north of Atlanta and 1 hour east of Chattanooga Tenn. Most of the listings have pics and some have links to the owners' site. Murphy is in the southern foothills of the Smoky Mountain National Park - a really gorgeous area!

Rae, can you make some recommendations for lodging around Blowing Rock?

We always rented there (prior to building) for a week and went thru the local realtors.. I'll try to find the names and phone numbers and post for you. There are many hotels/motels that are nice... Boone has more than Blowing Rock, but only about 10 minutes away. There is a relatively new Best Western in Boone on Route 421 that was real nice. I'll get back to you.....

I'm back! Here is a real good website for Blowing Rock/Boone area. We used Jenkins Realtors in Blowing Rock most of the time. Chetola is a beautiful resort there, but a little pricey. Good Luck! It's a wonderful place and I miss it terribly.

Rae, I would love to stay in the Timberlake Lodge! Thanks for the link. I also looked at Meadowbrook too.

Do you know anything about the Village Inn?

I had a friend who stayed at the Village Inn (was something else before) and she said it was 'nice'. The Meadowbrook was looked very nice and clean and was very short walk to downtown Blowing Rock (tons of unique shops). Some of the rental homes were available for long weekends ... we had always taken the dog with us so needed more room for him to run.

I recomend you try BRYSON CITY, LAKE FONTANA or anything on the North Carolina side of THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK or near FRANKLIN. You will have much more to do, and still not feel like the usual turist.
Try www.vrbo.com

ed-gar, thanks for the tip on Fontana/Franklin area. I spent many summer weekends as a child in Franklin visiting my aunt/uncle/cousins. We also spent lots of time at Maggie Valley and Fontana. It is indeed a lovely area, and has been so developed since my visits in the early 70's. However, I've never been to the Blowing Rock/Boone area. So I'm looking forward to visiting that area too. Hopefully I'll have a quiet weekend, some snow, a little sightseeing, and a Sunday morning massage. :)

Sophie, BOONE and BLOWING ROCK have also developed alot, and in a high end way(at least fo us) but FONTANA is still like another world.
In the end is a matter of taste, since I have never liked the areas you mentioned as much as other people do.The mountains are special in the way that different areas apeak to different folk, plus it is good to see it all.
We'll be in FRANKLIN on the 13th of this month to stay for the first time in a little vacation house we just closed on last month, and we are very exited.

Hope you have a great time.

ed-gar, I have a good friend whose husband goes up to Fontana to do the mountain and trail biking thing. He loves it too!

You know, you are so right about development and the mountains. I remember growing up as a child in North Georgia in the 60's and 70's and my dad always took us for trips into the Smokies and Western NC. I can remember how UNdeveloped it was at that time. It was so rural and not your popular travel destination. At least, not like it has become in the last 25 years or so. As a child, and a young preteen, I didn't appreciate that and was bored out of my mind. I'm afraid that when I head that way in a few weeks, I'll be so disappointed. The mountains I remember were deep and quiet and felt totally disconnected from civilization. As a teenager and young adult, my friends and I use to kayak and raft the Nantahala, the Chatooga, and the Ocoee Rivers. At that age I learned to appreciate the beauty and vastness of that area. I guess I wish it was still like that.

You are right Sophie, I have visited the mountains for 20 years and, so much has changed, even just in the last 5, especially since it is hard living the cities anymore, and also the huricanes in the south.
We always go out of season, end of September to first week of October, and also april. That way we miss the crowds It's colder, but coming from MIAMI it feels great, especially for hiking. we're not resort types, so we love tent camping, and the fire, and all of that, plus we always have a better time when we are thrifty.
We have being dreaming of moving to the area some day. I hope those places do not change before we get there, and I hope we dont change them after we arrive.
