I've been feverishly trying to get some last minute gifts completed. I am so excited because I finished a scarf for my husband and got that wrapped last night. I also have 2 other fun furs as gifts, as well as a prayer shawl for dh's grandmother. I hope that after today I'll get some more knitting time in. There is one person I'd like to knit something for and I won't see them until a few days after Christmas, but I don't know if I'll get a chance. I've also done a few Christmas dish cloths.

Anyone else completing projects for Christmas?

I was wondering do you have a knitting machine? How did you make the dishcloths? I am trying to make a prayer shawl but the pattern is to complicated maybe because i am just beginning. What pattern did you use. The one i am making comes out with a basket weave design. Your gifts sound so nice and i bet grandmother will love her shawl and hubby his scarf.

I'm currently knitting a pair of socks, but they aren't particularly for Christmas. They're just for me.

I did finish a pair of mittens and a hat. I need those for Christmas day. We're going to the ICE show at ***lord Palms. I can't STAND to have cold hands.

Sweetie,

When I did the prayer shawl, I ended up doing it all with the knit stitch because I was putting it down and picking it up so much and kept getting off. I used the directions from this website. http://www.shawlministry.com/

As far as the dish cloth goes, I just cast on the number of stitches I wanted it wide and then just did it as big as I thought it should be. I did that all in the knit (garter) stitch. A lady in my office gave me one last year. I got my yarn at Michael's. It comes in a skein that has red, white and green in it. It is very inexpensive, something like a $1.50 a skein. And you can get about 2 dish clothes out of 1 skein. The yarn is cotton and gets really soft in the water.

And no, I don't have a knitting machine. Just my two hands. :D

Dee,

I really like your projects. I've got a pair of socks going (my first pair) and I haven't finished them yet. I hope to do some work on them over Christmas. I haven't attempted mittens yet.

Thanks.

Mittens are easier than socks, especially if you do the two-needle type of mittens. I think my pair took me three days.

What kind of yarn are you using for your socks? I have Trekking XX on the needles right now in a grey/tan/white blend.

Does anyone do worsted weight socks? I've been looking for a pattern that I love (everyone wanted house socks for Christmas this year) and have ended up having to write one...they came out well, but I'd still like to see some other patterns.

I did one pair of worsted weight using Lion Brand yarn. They did not hold up very well, so I probably won't do another pair. The bottoms of the heel wore out VERY quickly (like after 5 or 6 wearings). I've had some of my DK weight socks for 3 years of constant wearing.

DeeK,

I can never remember the name of the brand of yarn for my socks. It is a German name. They are the self striping kind. Since I've been working on my felted hat I haven't really worked on my socks in a while.

I wonder if it was the yarn? I've been using the Lamb's Pride worsted weight for these...it's more expensive, but it holds up well and makes nice cushy comfortable socks. I've had a pair that my mother made out of the same yarn for quite a while now.

It could well be a problem with that particular brand. You know what they say, "you get what you pay for". Lion Brand is relatively inexpensive.

I'm not sorry I made them. It was a good learning experience and while I had them, I enjoyed them. LOL I've heard SUCH good things about Lamb's Pride. I'm going to have to get some.

I'm doing a self-striping now, but it's an American brand -- Lorna's Laces. I think the Fortissimo Colori had German on the label. It's been awhile since I knit those socks, but I remember liking that yarn A LOT! It's held up real well.

I've also used JaWoll and threw out the first pair. They finally wore out, but they were worn a long, long time! :)

I knit little jumpers for Oxfam, for Christmas. They can be any colour and I find the more stressed out I am, the more colourful my wee jumpers are.
If you want to destress, knit a wee jumper for Oxfam!
