My friends and I have just started a Pokeno group and I was curious how you all have your groups set up? For example, we have started by each person bringing a gift around $10-15 and then whoever hosts the group cooks the food and provides the drinks. We play until all gifts are chosen, take a little break and then play another round in which people can "steal" other's gifts. So in essence if you win every game in the 2nd round you could go home with all the gifts.
I would love to hear how you all do the gathering in your group and get new ideas!
Thanks!!

we play once a month and everyone pays $20.00 that $15.00 goes to the hostess for the next month and she can purchase 5-12 gifts....lots of enjoy the 12 smaller gifts rather than the 5, but were all happy either way....then the hostess does all the food drinks and desserts her month and monies go toward the gifts of her choice.....the extra 5 is all put into a pot, before we begin playing any games, we choose a certain card, if you POKENO on that card, the pot is yours, BUT, if no one has by the end of the night, we draw names and that person gets it.....be all agree we don't tell hubbies about the extra "pot" , lol, so we save it for extra something for ourselves, lol....we are a good diverse group of ladies that really have become close friends and have a lot of fun together, and we don't have to wear red hats....enjoy, oh , we play 12 games have dessert, play another 12 games and who ever wins the most gets 1st place and so on, incase of tie, we draw cards, high card wins, we also add a point if your "belly button" denter card is the first one called, a friend has a special little gift that who ever gets belly button gets, but then who ever gets a belly button next, well, it is then theirs, so at the end, who ever has it, keeps it, usually a small candle or wind chimes, something 3 bucks or less....enjoy

Sorry I have not responded - I have been out of town. In any event, Pokeno is exactly like playing Bingo but instead of calling out "B-10" you use a deck of cards and put a chip down if the card called is on your Pokeno (aka Bingo) card. You can win just like Bingo - straight up and down, diagonal, 4 corners and the middle, etc.
It really is an excuse for friends to get together and eat some good food and hopefully win some fun prizes. I know many groups play many different ways and I am anxious to hear extra ideas.

I am part of a group of ladies who have been playing Pokeno once a month for two years. We have a great time.
Each person brings a $8-10 gift. The hostess picks a gift first. Then, we play a game for each of the remaining gifts. A gift winner can trade for a previously opened gift. The hostess can trade at the end for any gift.
Each Pokeno night has a theme (i.e. Valentine's, Luau, Farmer's Market, etc.), so people shop for gifts that fit the theme. The hostess serves a dinner that fits the theme also. During December we have a 'Homemade' theme, and instead of buying a gift we bring a craft. It's a hoot.
We also play for nickels and have a money pot for 'full card'. I can explain all the details if you are interested.
As mentioned, we have been playing for two years and have become very fanatical about the game.

I have been a great fan and player of Pokeno for many years. We have a different twist to the game in our Pokeno Club. We have 5 large cups placed in the center of the table they are labeled "Center,""4-of a Kind,""4-Corners," "Pokeno" and "Kitty". In addition to the normal vertical and horizontal Pokeno wins, if a card is called and that card matches the card on the center of your board, you call out "Center," then you get all the money in that cup, if the cards at the 4 corners of your game board are called, you call out "4-Corners," and you win all the money in that cup, and so on. The "Kitty" is used when we are ready to quit for the night. Then we play until the entire board is called, the first person to complete his/her game board calls out "Kitty" and they win all the money in that pot (this is the most sought after pot of money because it is constantly growing throughout the evening and is only emptied once). In the case of the "Kitty" it is still active even if Pokeno is called, you play until the entire board is covered. Sometimes there are funny arguments when two people call it at the same time. In those cases we usually agree to split the pots of money. We usually play with nickels (1 per each of the 5 cups, per game, and agree to an increased amount when ending the game and going tor the Kitty). Sometimes we add a "House" cup where everyone contributes an agreed upon amount. This cup goes to the host/hostess to offset the costs of refreshments, or it goes to the person hosting the next game. I recently purchased a "Pokeno-Too set." It includes and additional set of 12 different game boards and combined with the original Pokeno game, it allows up to 24 players. Our Pokeno Club is really growing!

Here in Louisiana, they can be purchased at Toys R Us......10 dollars and use 2 decks of regular cards, one to call with while the other deck is being shuffled for the next round!

Dear topolady...
I am not clear on your idea about a different way of playing pokeno. Does the winning money go into the cups before you begin playing? We play for $1 bills for each regular game with a small pot for the cover all and would like to try something new (just like bingo).
Thanks!

I've been in a pokeno group for almost three years. We meet once a month on the 1st or 2nd Saturday of each month from 6-10. We take turns hosting. The host provides dinner and desert for everyone. We eat from 6-7. The tables are set up with four people at each. There is one deck of cards for each player. You can trade card decks so your not always dealing from the same deck. There are around 20 people in the group. Plus you can bring someone new. There are NO men or kids aloud. Everyone brings a $10 gift, a $2 gift and $1. The gifts can be worth more but you can't spend more than $10 & $2. I love going to Kohls. They have the best clearence!! The $10 gifts are brought in giftbags so no one knows what they are. The $2 gifts are not wrapped or in a bag. The $1 goes in the money can for later. You set your gifts on the table with the $2 gift in front of the giftbag with the $10 gift in it. We eat first. Then the hostess shows everyone the $2 gifts. When some wins a round they choose a $2 gift. They then show everyone the $10 gift in the bag. The $2 gift is theirs to keep along with the gift bag. NO ONE CAN STEAL IT!! The $10 gift stays on the table. The name of the $10 gift is written on a yellow sticky and put on the back of the gamecard of the person who won it. This continues until all the $2 gifts are gone. Then we move on to the $10 gifts. By now everyone has yellow stickys on the back of their cards if they've won any rounds. When you win after the $2 gifts are gone you yell out the $10 gift you want. The person who has that sticky on the back of their gamecard gives the sticky to you. Its yours until someone else wins and hollers for it. We break from 8:30-9 for dessert. At 9:30 we set the timer. This lets everyone know we have about 20 minutes left. Then we play fast. When the timer goes off at ten till 10:00 whatever the name of the prize on the back of your card is YOURS!!!!! Some people when 4 or 5 gifts. Others don't win anything. Its all luck of the draw. We then play BLACKOUT for the money in the can. If there are 20 people who came you win $20 if you win blackout!!! (Blackout is when your WHOLE card is covered). We all have a blast. You can reach me at danalhollis@yahoo.com if you have questions.
