It seems like anything I put on my cofffee table, just becomes clutter or gets in the way while watching TV. Does anyone else have this problem?
Right now, I have my current SL and CL magazines on it with 3 chunky candle holders and pillar candles, my dh complains that the candles are in the way when he lies on the couch so he moves them.
Just looking for ideas!!

I have one chunky candle in a plate type holder. Its the small (maybe 4 inch high) chunky or column style and the holder is a small square shape with edges that sort of turn up a bit. Its small enough that its really not in the way at all. I have a stack of probably 3-4 mags and a couple of coasters. Thats all. I have a lower shelf on my coffee table where I keep a couple of coffe table type books. My coffee table tends to get cluttered too.

Right now I have a crystal footed brandy snifter with sand and shells I picked up at the beach. Beneath that I have a small book called "Seacoast Life" with a large star fish on top. On the other end is a round container on a metal stand of "grass" and an antique bowl of summer potpourri with lemons, pods and glass raspberries.
I was raised near the coast and visit there nearly every summer but am far away now. This makes me feel close to my roots for the summertime.
Guess I'll have to think about something else as soon as September rolls around.
I have shells and a candle, too :)
The chunky cream-colored pillar candle is sitting in an old pale yellow earthenware bowl surrounded by little shells and the bowl, in turn, sits on an old green tray.
The other shells are in a 3-sided glassed pyramid looking thingy with a door that swings open so things can be put inside and it has a little finial on top and little ball feet.
I'd have some of my favorite books on the table, but there is a puppy with a bad habit of chewing up things right now...Donna Tea, I'd love to be able to have some pretty potpourri like yours, but that darn puppy...
I'll swap out the shells for something else, too, a little closer to fall...

I have 3 candles and some books - 1) Ambrosia - it's a Jr. League of Vicksburg, MS cookbook, but also a very interesting and pretty coffee table book; 2) a book antibellium (spell) homes in Natchez, MS and I don't remember the other one - lol! :D Probably baseball, robots, outter space, animals or something of my son's.

I don't have anything on my coffee table because I don't have a coffee table. I do not like them. They are always in the way, collect junk, and don't seem to add anything to the room. I sold a beautiful oval, solid cherry coffee table just to get it out of my way. I guess I am too practical. If it doesn't have a real function, get it out!!

I don't have a coffee table. I have had small children in house for the last few years and we have enjoyed the open floor space. Just recently I have begun to think I might like to have a large square one...maybe one of those big upholstered ottomans would serve the same purpose.

I don't have coffee tables anymore either. I do have a big ottoman in my sitting room that would serve as a coffee table if I needed it to. It does usually have a pile of magazines on it that I haven't gotten to yet. ;)

:p :p
My husband's feet and an empty wine glass.
I agree w/ everyone's sentiment about the coffee table being a catch all for remotes, magazines, tissue boxes etc. but I just can't do without one.
When folks come over my DH knows, that is his job, organize the coffee table and bring the recycle newspapers down to the cellar.

My coffee table has a tray with a Fitz and Floyd teapot, creamer and sugar on it - the teapot is VERY ornate with doves and bows all over it. I have a beautiful coffee table type book with paintings of fruits and flowers. I have a large ceramic Fitz & Floyd rabbit and a small Fitz & Floyd 'leaf' containing two baby bunnies. Our living room is not used regularly, so none of these things get in the way. But, I figure, if you have lovely things, then why not use them - life's too short! :p

I don't have a coffee table either - isn't it strange - the standard for so long was coffee table with the standard magazines, candles, assorted stuff and now more and more people are going to the ottoman or nothing at all. I don't have one because I have a large chair with a large ottoman and there is no room for a coffee table. I don't use the ottoman as a substitute however, it truly is an ottoman that the dog has claimed as her domain. I leave a quilt folded up on it and that's it.
On my F.R. table, I have a small black metal bowl w/ some decorative balls from Michaels and my favorite picture of my daughter.
On my L.R. table I have 3 photo frames and a large ceramic vase w/ dried eucalyptus and goldenrod.
Dor, your Fitz & Foyd sounds lovely~
I have a glass coffee table & it drives me nuts with all the smudges and puppy kisses~I'm definately going to be looking for a big square wooden here in the near future~then I can pile more stuff on it :D
[QUOTE=LynninGeorgia]I don't have a coffee table, as my LR isn't big enough. I do have a creamy yellow ottoman in front of my fire place, and I guess it "acts" as a coffee table. Right now, it has the remote, a book I'm reading and a Traditional Home magazine on it.
QUOTE]
Lynn, I love the look of an ottoman used for a coffee table~we just can't do that because 1) the cats would scratch the daylights out of it & since a coffee table/ottoman is sort of a center of attention...and 2) with a stuffed top, if a cat jumped up there (and cats would be there all the time), everything on board would fall off or get pushed off by an FBC looking for a soft place to park...

Dust :D
I love your response! LOL! On top of the dust on my coffee table is a beautiful silk flower arrangement that is wearing out because it's moved back and forth out of the way of the TV. I keep putting it back for some reason.....!

My LR has 3 staggered pillar candle holders with navy short candles, an orchid arrangment a previous student gave me, 2 coffee table books- one on the history of Atlanta, and one from a museum visit, with a little decorative bird doo-dad on top.
Now... my FR coffee table has been moved to the playroom to put an old dinosaur computer on for DD. (plus her treasures) Before that, it was a dumping ground for stuff. It really made the whole room look messy, but it was functional. It was an everyday thing to keep it cleared off. Now things accumulate in little piles by the couch and chairs. I'm not sure which was worse to see! Gotta live, though.

I have done the same thing - no more coffee tables! People only put their feet on them anyway  so I replaced the family room table with a large ottoman. I have found that it makes the room more comfortable. The living room still has a coffee table, with a candle, & small silk greenery arrangement.

2 gifts from a very dear friend: LONG time ago she had given me a table runner that had embroidered flowers and the edges all around were tatted by her grandmother. I have that and sitting on that isa HUGE cereamic Magnolia about 12" x 12" that she gave me a couple of years ago. I love that I can now after all these years have a place to display her gifts to me.

Some folded clothes that need to be put away. I don't keep anything on my coffee table. I have little ones and usually someone is doing homework or an art project on it. Or I leave folded clothes on it,lol.

Put my coffee table in storage as part of my decluttering effort to sell our house. I don't miss it. In fact, most of the things I removed, I don't miss. Hmm, what does that tell us?

I have a tapestry runner, with a wire decorative basket on top. Inside of the basket is some Halloween candy. :D
