Our pet smells. She's a retriever and was bathed two weeks ago -- but she stinks already. Is there any dog coat freshener that is safe to use?

Suzanne - I don't know what it is about these wonderful retrievers - but they are stinky!!

Our golden smells no matter what we bathe her in, spray on her, feed her. Especially in the summer when she soaks in the pool, then it's a terrible sour smell. I asked the vet about it who said it may be a yeast on her skin.

I gave her a bath one time, and added a tiny splash of Clorox to a bucket of water to rinse her, then I rinsed & rinsed with clear water. I thought the Clorox might kill whatever is on her coat to make that smell. Did not work.

I have found a odor neutralizer for dogs at Petsmart, smells cedary. That will work for a day or two, but then the smell is back. I have been threatening to douse her in Febreeze - just kidding.

I doubt this is helpful, I'm just responding to let you know that it's not just your dog, and I'm happy to know it's not just mine! :)

I also have a Golden Retriever.. After giving her baths, brushing her teeth, she would still stink. On a trip to the vet my husband explained to the doc that I thought she stunk and that he {Husband} was constently giving her a bath. Vet checked her skin and said this was one of the cleanest dogs she ever saw. The STINK problem was in her ears..The vet gave us this doggie ear wash and showed him how to smush it all in.. Not a stink to be smelled.. Everytime I think shes becoming stinky, low and behold its her ears. Somehow black disgusting gunk gets in there or forms in there. Needless to say I love my doggie ear wash.. :D

I do the earwash thing too. My dog has a musty-sour smell, worse in the summer. Good thing those Goldens are so darn cute!
