DH asked if there was such a publication as Northern Living? I think Sunset is the midwest version of Southern Living, but do other parts of the country have a magazine specific to the regions? Guess I'm so satisfied with my geographic location that I've never thought of looking at other areas... ;)

Why would anyone be interested in Northern Living? :D {just kidding!!!}

I don't know of one of the Northeast. There is one for the Midwest I believe.

As far as I know there isn't one produced like Southern Living but there are some for the area:

Y*a*n*k*e*e* Magazine, which is a general magazine for New England. You won't get much home design info. but some good recipes and some gardening from time to time.

Others are Adirondack Life, Saratoga Living and Cape Cod magazine. I am familiar with these but they are more regional specific than Y*a*n*k*e*e*.

Y*a*n*k*e*e* Magazine (http://www.******magazine.com/)

Adirondack Life (http://www.adirondacklife.com/)

Saratoga Living (http://www.saratogaliving.com/)

Cape Cod Magazine (http://www.capecodmagazine.com/ccmag.html)

Y*A*N*K*E*E* magazine? Are you serious? I have always thought to call someone that would be offensive. What I mean is with all of the politically correct terms these days I would have never considered that name for a publication.

Yes, Y*a*n*k*e*e* Magazine...very popular New England magazine. It isn't offensive in the least and I don't think the folks who get it are offended either. I imagine the term can be offensive depending on the context or attitude of the user.

I am a dyed in the wool southerner but I love Y*A*N*K*E*E* Magazine. I've subscribed to it for 25 years. I've learned so much about that area through that magazine. It's changed though over the last 2 or 3 years much to the chagrin of it's loyal base. It used to really grasp the everyday living and obsticles (local politics and such) more so than it does today. Their formula has changed somewhat to having a more pronounced upperscale vaneer than the older issues. It's been in production since around 1900 I believe.

On the other hand, I don't care for Midwest Living, it's just never grabbed me and I love regional magazines. Besides Southern Living I also subscribe to Blue Ridge Country, Our State Magazine (North Carolina), Vermont Living and Down East Magazine (Maine) and those are just my regional subscriptions...*blush*

Southern Style, thanks for posting those links, I'm off to check them out. I just hope I can resist yet another subscription addiction.

Kaler, Bless your heart! It sounds like you might have a touch of my personal affliction: Magazine Addiction!!! I do love the regional ones.

Southern Style, I've tried to cut back, I really have but to no avail. I always give in and submit another 1 year subscription. What I need is an intervention I'm afraid.

I am right there with you! I tried really hard to go to the library to read theirs, but there is something so irresistable about flipping though on your own. I look at some a few times...What are some of your other favorites?

LOL, I have been "sober" for almost a month! I haven't bought a magazine off the rack in almost a month (though, I have looked plenty). I have waited patiently for my subscriptions to arrive and have actually decided to give up a couple as they are nearing expiration (BH&G and Cottage Living).

Good luck Southern Style, I've been down that road. I go into withdrawals LOL. I have also decided to let my BH&G lapse but *sigh* I have another year on my subscription. You know, get 2 years for the price of one? I started to stop that magazine until I realized the year I'm receiving now is the *free* year. I'm also letting Cooking Light expire along with Christianity Today and Today's Christian Woman.

The problem is, I know that those will only be replaced with some sparklie new magazine that I've never subscribed to. Is there, I ask...hope for us?

How bad can this vice be for us? As long as we don't eat, drink or smoke the magazines we should be safe. :D

Shoot Scarlettdouble, I just saw this. Ok. Right now my all time favorite is "Oxford American"

I also get Paula Deens new mag but not sure if I'll keep subscribing, I get Ski Magazine, Prevention, Runners World Magazine, and Shape, I also get Fine Gardening, Romantic Homes and Traditional Homes. I pick up Gourmet and Wine Spectator when they look interesting along with anything else that catches my eye...

oh my gosh, I need help.

y'all I intentially DID NOT post on the favorite magazines thread because I DID NOT want to face my problem. Now, see what you've done :D .

LOL. How is the Paula Deen magazine? Are her adorable sons in it?

Kaler
04-25-2006, 10:22 AM
yes they are in the issue that I just got. It's my first one so far. I like it but I don't know. It kind of reminds me of Southern Lady magazine and I'm not fond of that one. I love Paula though.

If someone held a gun to my head (God Forbid) and said I could only subcribe to two magazines, it would be an easy choice. Our State (North Carolina) and Oxford American. Hands down they are the best IMO out there. Southern Living could even learn from Our State. It's fabulous.

The layout of articles, the photography and the excellent writing (especially Oxford American) can not be touched by any of the others.

I'll have to check those out next time I am in the bookstore. Photography really does make all the difference in a magazine.

Ya'll are just too funny!

Currently I subscribe to:

Southern Living- have had a subscription for almost my entire adult life!
Southern Lady
BH&G (will let expire)
Cottage Living(will let expire)
Country Living - have subscribed for over 20 years!
Prevention
Good Housekeeping (one of those 12 issues for 10$ but I won't resubscribe),
Nickelodeon Parents Magazine - love their kids friendly recipes and crafts
Romantic Homes - love the new look and feel
Northeast GA Living

I think that is it???? I DO save money with the subscriptions over cover price! ;) In the past year I have dropped Y*ankee Living and Adirondack Life.

I love to look at Marie Claire, will pick up Cape Cod Mag. on occasion. I have bought Paula's magazines but won't subscribe as I have heard they have some issues with subscription service (though, I do like the magazine). I will even buy Progressive Farmer when they have their idea home in it. I am a total sucker for those Windows & Walls and such! Oh...the insanity! ;)

Oh shoot. I forgot about Country Living, I get that too.

I can't remember a time when Southern living wasn't in my home, first with my mother's subscription then mine and I've been married 28 years.

Country Living I've subsribed to on and off for about the same amount of time as you.

hanging my head in embarassment.

Girls, girls, it's not that bad. I mean, do you sit down with a carton of Breyers while you are reading? And then we do "share" with our friends the recipes and ideas. We are actually doing the world and ourselves a "service" by subscribing and reading...LOL :p

I agree, it's not so bad. You could be addicted to plants like I am. I assure you, I spend far more on plants & gardening supplies in one year that you could possibly spend on magazine subscriptions. We all need a vice. ;) So, give up the guilt feelings and just enjoy!!! :D

In addition to Y*A*N*K*E*E* magazine, the region also has New Hampshire magazine

http://www.nh.com/apps/pbcs.dll/section?Category=NHM

Here is the link to Y*A*N*K*E*E magazine http://www.******magazine.com/

I love the special travel addition of the above magazine.

We did subscribe to the "Y" magazine for awhile. DH, being from New York, felt we should be an equal opportunity household. :D

We both love Oxford American. For a Christmas gift DH gave me a subscription to Paula Deen's magazine. We were also getting Coastal Living for awhile. DH loves magazine subscriptions more than I do. I have three or four top favorites, where as DH would put a library to shame if I would let him. We really had to cut both to save money and space.

I've only seen MIDWEST LIVING once or twice ... I think Meredith (Better Homes and Gardens) puts it out.

SUNSET is owned by So.Progress now .. but it is WESTERN - not midwest. They've always had good recipes in my opinion. I check it out at our public library (and check on line) ... as the subscription if you live OUTSIDE the west .. is a LOT more. Hmmm... maybe my daughter will start subscribing if she EVER finds a house in Seattle area!

There have been several 'off shoots' that I used to see once in awhile... but some seem to disappear. Y*A*n*k*e*e* has been around forever.... or so it seems... and I agree, it has some good things.

I've noticed that more cities are getting their own magazines ... some have been pretty good -- I'm not too fond of the one for my area (covers several cities/towns in our 'main' area) -- but I check it out occasionally.

When we travel, I like looking at the ones available in the area we are visiting.

I have subscribed to Midwest Living; I won't any more. Way too many ads. They do have some good recipes sometimes, but not near as many as SL, not near as good. (IMHO)

I'm sorry, but I guess I also should have added to previous post that I do live in the midwest; I still wasn't impressed with the magazine.

I used to subscribe to lots of magazines, but now I read them online. Free! The advantage to that is you can search out topics and information from back issues.

Kaler, I love going to the Christian Women Today's website. Also, I do like "Our State" magazine! It is beautifully done.

I have seen Lily but haven't given in yet. It is pretty pricey but doesn't appear to have much (any???) advertising so I imagine that really refects in the price. I have enjoyed looking through it on the racks!

I think they mention newsstand only in it and only 4 a year- it was worth the 5 bucks - good recipes, fab potos and really some nice ideas!

I saw Lily last week at Jo Ann Fabric.

Its nice to know that I'm not the only girl with a massive magazine addiction, and that I'm not the only Northern girl not happy with my reigon's magazines.

I read both Philadelphia Magazine and New York Magazine (not the same as the New Yorker!). My little area also has a mag called "Main Line Living" which is verrry local, covering about 20 miles of towns along one particular route near Philly.

I share the magazine addiction, ladies. Right now, through some combination of subscribing and odd mailing lists, we get:

- Automobile
- Plane and Pilot
- Road and Track'
- Esquire
- Good Housekeeping
- Conde Nast Traveler
- Town and Country Traveler
- National Geographic Traveler
- Better Homes and Gardens
- Cigar Afficianado
- Vogue
- Redbook
- Mary Engelbreit
- Cookie
- Allure
- Traditional Home
- Working Mother
- oh, jeez...I know I've forgotten a few. Blast.

Anyway, I'm always on the lookout for more. I've subscribed to SL in the past and probably will again soon, and I also may sub to InStyle. I miss, miss, miss the late, great and much-lamented Mode and Victoria - sob!

And, I recently bought the first issue of Lily, but didn't love it. I thought it a little lightweight for the price and the "voice" of the magazine didn't really speak to me - I'm a more liberal Christian and the editorial focus was a bit conservative for me. Previous posters were right, though, that Lily's photos are lovely and well-shot.

We're taking a couple long car drives in July and I've been saving up mags - not reading them - for the trips. It's so hard not to crack them open with my morning tea! Keeping those mags unread is about as disciplined as I get these days!
