View Full Version : Discounts from vets for homeless critters?

A few weeks ago, we found a homeless mother dog w/ newborn puppies. We have the puppies adopted out to a no-kill sanctuary and they go there next week. If we keep the mom (no one is going to want to adopt her, I'm sure) are there organizations that offer discounts for her to be spayed? Does anyone know where I'd look for info? I called my vet and they will give me 10% off, but that's not much.

Thanks for any ideas.

Missi, try your local Humane Society. I know ours does it at cost. (Not sure what that is, though.)

Missi: This post tugged at my heartstrings! My, she is so lucky YOU found her! I agree with the local Humane Society. Even some local vets may take pity; I know our has a deal with the local animal shelte and does free spayings for them. God Bless You! :o

There is an organization called PAWS here that may have other chapters elsewhere. They do exactly what you are looking for.

Oh sweet! You are so nice to keep her. She is lucky. The Humane Societies may be able to get you the name of a vet who works with them on the low-cost spay/neuters.

Thanks all. I sent an email to the HS and hope they can help. I already have four animals, so in order to take on one more, I need a discount on the vet. fees. She is a sweet dog and the puppies are precious. I hope/pray they will get good homes.

They are muts, but she is partly Chow - she looks like a big red fox and has the spots on her tongue. I found 6 babies (the day they were born or the day after) and 2 had died. There are 4 now - two are brown, w/ white under their chins and on their paws and a darker brown down their backs. One is black and white and one is brown and white - 2 boys/2 girls.

I'm back.... anyway, the mom has none of the Chow "mane" but is that color and has the spots on her tongue. The babies are precious - very fat and sweet.

The mom had starved so badly, I am shocked that she gave birth to any live puppies - her ribs and backbone were sticking out when I found her - not to mention it was 95º outside. The first time I gave her water, she drank 4 bowls. Poor thing - but she is so sweet and not afraid of people. I wonder if she belonged to someone and they kicked her out when they found out she was pregnant or some mean thing like that. Anyway.... DH said we can keep her, so when the puppies go to the sanctuary (they give them shots and adopt them out from there), she will go to be spayed, have shots and what will probably be her FIRST bath in her lifetime.

We just told my son he could keep her and he told her "girl, you hit the jackpot!" :D My son would love to keep a puppy, but he has a big heart and knows that they will find good homes, but that the mom won't, so he wants to keep her instead so she will have a good home.

What a wonderful story! I am glad your son is able to learn so much from this, too. You are so right; those pups will go in an instant but nobody would want poor mama. The poor thing is so lucky to be alive after what she must have gone through. We went to get a poodle 12 years ago and one spirited little guy picked us right out but we ended up with both him and a little female who hid from everyone because I knew no one would ever want her......she is still very shy but just the sweetest little dog ever!

Stories like this remind me of why I hate people
they treat animals as if they're disposable....just things to be dumped somewhere when they decide they don't want them. It's a good thing I'm not God....it would be pretty much first offense, it's to the brimstone for you! I have 2 rescue kitties myself, both were dumped. One I got from our local shelter, the other showed up at the front door of my company's workplace, dirty, ears chewed, and skinny as a little walking stick...poor baby just fell on the food we gave him, who knows how long he'd gone hungry! he has gone from 1 pound to 13... :D my other from 2 to 17. Big healthy boys!

Missi, your story has just brought tears to my eyes. I'm quite a 'toughy' but when it comes to animals, I just melt. We have a mixed lab, Chandler, who is 2, and we got her from the pound when she was 8 weeks old. She and her brother were dumped outside the animal shelter just after they were born. We wanted them both, but by the time my husband had gotten back to the pound, somebody had taken the little boy. Shortly after we adopted her, I came home one day to find a chocolate lab in my yard. He was limping badly, and walking all twisted like. My son had found him and brought him home, knowing that I would help it. As we had just gotten Chandler a few weeks earlier, I wasn't able to keep him. Anyway, I settled him in the yard with blankets, water and some food whilst I made some phone calls to animal shelters, vets etc. After an exhaustive search (all the animal shelters were full), I finally found one that would take him, and asked if I would be prepared to take him to our local vets, pay for shots, neutering etc.etc. and that she would pick him up from the vets. I did this (it almost broke my heart, cos by now I had fallen in love with him), and it turned out upon examination that someone had SHOT 23 pellets in his hip. I thought I was gonna just sob my heart out. The vet operated on him and he went home later to the animal shelter. I kept in touch, hoping that I would be able to eventually adopt him (husband was ADAMANT that we couldn't take him), however, a nice couple adopted him, and sent pictures of him sleeping on a king size bed, of him at the river camping etc.etc.etc. To this day it breaks my heart when I think of this beautiful dog (Hunter) - he was all smiles and kisses when he was in my yard - I swear I would 'do time' for the person who shot him if I get my hands on him/her! God bless you Missi!

Missi, I think it is so wonderful what you are doing for these animals. So many people just don't seem to care anymore. It breaks my heart when I hear stories of abuse and and neglect. It seems to happen more and more lately! Bless you for your big heart!

I have 6 rescued dogs and they are the most wonderful pets. They all are so loving and good. My sister works with a rescue group in Jasper, GA and she has 16 dogs! Rescues are the best pets you can find and thank goodness for all of the people that do actually have a heart!
I live on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi - and the SPCA in Gulfport used to offer reduced price staying/neutering. But, since Katrina I don't even know where to find them. There are still several rescue groups from all over the country that come in and out to help with the aniamls from Katrina; but other than the SPCA in Gulfport, I don't think there are any operating shelters right now (non- kill shelters that is!). Good luck with the dog, I would call some vets around to see if they can help out with the cost. Mobile, Alabama does have some rescue groups - if you are not too far from that area. Go to Petfinder.org and look for rescue groups in the area of Mississippi you live in. Good luck!
