This is in response to the Southern Slang thread. A while back, I bought 2 pocket size books for a ****** friend who made a big joke out of "yonder". The titles were "How to Speak Southern" and "More How to Speak Southern". Though I can't recall the authors (who are southerners) they take a witty look at "our language" and slang that's been passed down through generations.

I know which books you're talking about, I got them for my husband when we first got married so he would know "wha tha heck we're talking about" when he had to go to MY family functions. What funny memories I have of my husband and my family talking to each other, they'd each look at ME to translate what the other had said, LOL! Actually, after almost 17 years together, my husband still has a hard time understanding one of my aunts, he just smiles and nods his head while she talks, then asks later what she was talking about. :D

I actually bought one of those books when I first moved to South Carolina from north west Indiana. It really did help me understand some of the terms that the Southern folks were using. I still have it after 19 yrs, but now I find myself using a lot of the Southern slang . LOL
