I recently started using the scoopable cat litter which is a much finer grain than the old chunky(normal) kind I used to put out. One of my cats will not stay out of the litter box. She goes in there constantly to dig and dig in the litter. Needless to say, she is making a huge mess and tracking the nasty stuff all over the house. I thought at first that she was sick. I have watched her very closely and come to the conclusion that the only thing wrong with her is that she is fascinated by this new texture of cat litter.

Have any of you ever had this problem? Will she get over it or will I have to switch back to the coarse grain litter?

My cat is 23 and I'd switched to the clumping kind too. You are right - as he gets older, he makes such a mess around the litter box - but worse yet, he seems to get the clumps inbetween his paws and then we find bits on furniture etc. I just switched back to the old regular kind and no more problem. Maybe is you started kittens right from the beginning with the clumping it might be okay; but, it's still messier.

You do need to make a few modifications when you use scoopable. I keep a small area rug under the litterbox and a tracking mat directly in front of it. Also sweep the room where the box is located every morning. Keeping kitty's claws trimmed helps too.

Thanks for the tips! At least I know my kitty hasn't completely lost her mind.
