I didn't quite know how to title this thread so sorry if I've confused you.
This is my question, we were watching TV last night (Thursday is the only time we actually carve out time to watch) and were just very disgusted with the amount of sexualization there was in the shows we watch. On CSI they had a man who has a fetish for woman biting him - ICK and then on ER they had a female doctor mailing "pin-up" photos of herself to her boyfriend in Iraq and her roommate had a "sleep over" and it got very loud. Then they showed the scenes for next week where a lady is a guys "self-gratification therapist" (I think I remembered that correctly).
DH had taped Smallville and the impression they left you with is that Lana and Clark did the deed and we were more than just a little put-off by all of it.
I know the old adage "sex sells" but why do they feel it necessary to put it in EVERYTHING?!?!?! And when they do why does it always have to be so OUT THERE?!?!?! I'm not a prude but I'm very much of the opinion that what goes on in the bedroom should stay in the bedroom - not for public consumption. I don't know - maybe I'm just getting old. Is 37 old?
Thanks for letting me vent.
I can't speak about the 2 shows besides CSI. I've never watched them, but I've always thought that about CSI Las Vegas (haven't seen the spinoffs). I don't care for that show because they always seem to be dealing with some weird sexual behavior that leads to the murder somehow. Maybe not always but enough that that's the impression I have of that show. My husband likes it so we watch it. Last night when they started in on that fetish I told him again that seems to be the running theme of that show and got up and went to bed. I'm not a prude but too much is too much. It gets old fast. I tend to think they (as in all those type shows and movies)have very small brains and not enough intelligence to write a show that can get the story out there without all the sex and profanity. Yes, sex sells but I think the writers, producers and directors tend to forget the female audience. I bet anything you want to bet that most women don't get anything out of those story lines.

I have always really enjoyed CSI. I think it comes down to your decision of what you choose to focus on. I have noticed that the writers do an amazing job with plot twists and are generally on-point with techniques employed but the real CSI teams.
I don't disagree that there are a lot of episodes that begin with a plot line including some sexually based info, but to let that overshadow the shows major strenghts is a shame. Last week the show ranked no.1 in the rankings - obviously they are doing something right?

Martha - don't get me wrong - we love the shows for the very reasons you stated - great writing, great plots just starting to go over board with the sex stuff and I really think the show would be just as good without the graphicness of it. For example - the show wasn't this bad when it first started and was hailed as one of the best shows on TV. 3 years down the road and it feels as though they can't think of anything without throwing in detailed information about things of a sexual nature. Just gets a little old when everything you've chosen to watch turns this corner.

agreed, it is starting to be more "shocking" to see episodes that are not sexually based huh??

Oh, I don't know. As I said, I'm no prude. But Weird sex fetishes does indeed seem to be the running theme of that show. It's not something I choose to focus on it's just there and it's noticable.
As for sex in other shows. If it lends itself to the betterment of the show, I couldn't care less but just for the sake of sex is short sighted on the writers and producers part. They are appealing to the lowest common denomenator. Maybe you could ask yourself why CSI was rated #1. It draws a wide audience I'm sure for more reasons than plot twist.
I've also seen a few articles and interviews over the years from the pov of real csi teams where they roll their eyes a lot of times with some of the things they do on that show. Some may be on point but there are things that are far fetched too.
To each his own and I do like the show ok when it's about something besides biting fetishes, people and their sexual fantasies with others in animal costumes, tying people up in bed and all the others crazy subject lines they come up with.
The other 2 shows that lovemyhunny described doesn't sound like something that would be as offputting to me as it was to her but CSI LV is in class by themselves.

Luv, Would it not be wonderful to see well written movies or shows, drama, intrigue, hate and caring, WITHOUT viewing the sex, or having to hear offending language, IT can be done......they will only stop when we stop watching. Agree with you, it can be just way too much, seems like a lot of child incest/rape stuff, and really, is that good for our society to even watch?
You know, I found myself getting lost in an old movie yesterday . ( a rainy, cold Sunday) It was "Sayonora" with Marlon Brando. What a great movie. My daughter kept coming into the room saying "Mom! What ARE you watching?!" :D It's great to rediscover some of the classics.
