Default Working on hollidays support group

Well here is another holliday season and I will be stuck working, well sleeping mainly since I work 3rd shift. I am in grocery retail and that means everyone works for Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is really bad since I am use to doing all the cooking but now will miss that. Does anyone have any suggestions or is in the same boat?

And has a secondary question, Do you frequent businesses that open on Thanksgiving and Christmas? My wife has a policy of not doing so in the belief that if noone goes there these 2 days they will close. I know that businesses have to make money, I understand that, but why cant they be more understandind of their employees and let them have the holidays off as well. I mean the president of my company wont be working those 2 days, but he expects for us to.

I feel for you and I do my best to stay away from those businesses on holidays. The exception is that if we are traveling, we will stop for gas and eat in restaurants. My son is a firefighter so I understand that some have to work. So far, we have been able to accommodate his schedule, but my daughter is getting married so it will become harder. Maybe if we all make a concentrated effort to stay home on holidays, malls, department stores and grocery stores could give their employees a day off. I think we could all get our shopping done on the other days.
