Painting and Stressing

Can anyone give me any tips on painting and stressing an old dining room set,
it was on its way to the dumpster, but I think I could do something with it
is it necessary to sand before painting and I have heard everything to spray,brush to sponges
as well as cheap paint to expensive paint
I would appreciate any advise

I've never done this myself. I would suggest posting on the HGTV boards. Or, searching the HGTV website for instructions.
