White white white.
DH and I are moving into our first home at the end of May. However, we are renting it. The living room and dinning room are white with large white tile on the floor. They are basically one room separated by the front door. I plan to use furniture to break the rooms up even more. Without the ability to paint, my options are slim as to how to decorate the room. Our furniture is still what we had when we married almost three years ago. Black, metal tubing furniture and wooden furniture. What colors go well with these two mediums and what will help break up the rooms and add color. They both have average sized double windows in each "room". I have a two year old and will have a Newborn two months after we move in, so I need things that will be unbreakable, and safe for small children. I know I need to put some kind of rug in there so that if either falls they wont hurt themselves on the tile. Thanks for the help!

What's your favorite color? That's what I would choose to look for in rugs and window treatments. You can always paint the metal furniture, too. Good luck!

If you can get your hands on some Pottery Barn catalogue you can draw some ideas from these - I LOVE white/cream backgrounds to build around - with the tubed black furniture it can look exquisite - lots of white/creams - with some earthy tones thrown in - you can have a LOT of fun experimenting - the Pottery Barn cats are great for ideas and they even have a lot on sale on the website - good luck and have fun

Welcome to SL! The good thing about white is you can do anything!! Bright, muted....black. We have an interior designer here at SL. Maybe she'll make some suggestions, but I think from her posts in the past she is of the opinion you must always do what you can live with! Good luck!

Thank you all for your help. My favorite color is dark blue. My husband's favorite color is garnet. I will try to find the Pottery Barn Catolouges(sp?). I don't think we have one here, but I know there's one in my parents' city.
Thanks for the welcome.

duhon, look online for a Pottery Barn Catalogue - try www.potterybarn.com. Your dark blue and garnet would be lovely mixed with a little yellow. Potted plants (even silk ones that you don't have to water - and no mess if the babes turn them over) and 'trees' would be a nice touch and would soften the metal furniture and go well with the wood furniture. If you use throw pillows in 'your' colors, just get a rug and curtains or drapes using the same colors and everything will be tied together.
Good luck! I hope you post some pictures here when you have it done...

I found the site and ordered all four magazines just to see what I can find. Thank you sarah for your advice. I don't move into the house at the end of May, so I wont have any pics until sometime after then.

I have one more question on this thread. My floor is large square tile. What pattern of rug should I look for? Should I look for a pattern, or a solid? Do I need to make sure any lines on the rug match with the lines on the floor? Should it be round instead of rectangular or square?
Thanks for all the help!
