Default Southern Porch

My blog post today was on Southern Porches. I listed what I thought a great porch had to have. Would be interested to hear what everyone else thinks you MUST have for a good porch. My list is as http://asouthernlife.com/2009/04/a-southern-porch/

We entertain a lot on our porch.....lots of good seating, at least one ceiling fan. Tables and lamps for soft lighting at night. Plenty of ferns....hanging, on stands, on the floor....anywhere you can plop one! Ii love our porch! I spend as much time as I can out there reading!

Ferns, White Rocking Chairs and/or Swing, Ceiling Fan, Wicker Table, Sweet Tea... Those would be necessities on my Southern front porch.

Default Porch hospitality

Several comfy chairs, a few small tables and ferns provide the opportunity to entertain. But you need your friends, neighborhood children or even the mailperson sit a spell to really know if you have an inviting atmosphere. Sometimes you have someone to comfort or just while away the time. The condensation of iced tea can be such a relief on a hot day. Yes, it's the people who spend time on your porch who make it a great place.

All of the above and of course a swing with lots of colorful, plump pillows!

One of the comment someone made on my blog that I loved was that the porch needed a screen door so you could get the smells of great food coming from the kitchen. He said he loved hearing his grandmother in the kitchen and smelling the blackberry cobbler she made when he was a kid.

Isn't that lovely?

Yes, it is lovely....I can almost smell a blackberry cobbler. I had debated between blackberry and peach for dessert tonight. We had peach cobbler but I think I made a mistake!!! Oh, well, maybe I'll do dinner tomorrow around a blackberry cobbler!

Default southern porch

LOVE the screen door idea, I begged my husband several years ago for a screen door just so I could slam it and hear it creak every now and then. Growing up, I remember my mom forever yelling , don`t slam the door, who ever stops and closes the screen door, it just slams shut. Ferns and wicker and a swing on mine.
